Still revered as a pioneer, Boone accepted Spain's invitationto lead his family and other immigrants to Missouri in 1799. Highly regardedfor his fairness, Boone was made syndic, or magistrate,settling legal and financialmatters (left) under theJudgment Tree. The tree's locationis disputed. A likely spot is near the boundary of Boone's farm, south of Defiance (below), where the presentowner and a neighbor stand beyond old photographs of an elm thought to be the historictree.
