The second man from the right holds a machete, a large, heavy knifeused for cutting cane, inonehand, and over his left shoulder is a stalk with the leaves stripped from it. Sugar has been Cuba's dominant crop for 150 years; sugar exports and their value determine theisland's pros perity. The United States takes the bulk of the Cuban crop (see text, page 365).
