AMERICANS FOUGHT FOR "CUBA LIBRE" The American battleship, blown up in Havana harbor on the night of February 15, 1898, lay rusting in the mud for more than adecade before the United States Government raised the barnacle-covered hulk, towed it out to sea, and resunk it with honors. This historic photographshows the cofferdam inplace and the wreck being exposed, with the water half pumped out. The mast is now a monument in Arlington National Cemetery to victimsofthe disaster.
