Photograph byClifton Adams SANDAL-SHOD MEXICAN MINERS WALKING TO WORK Pachuca, in the State of Hidalgo, is one of the oldest and richest silver mines in the Western Hemisphere. One of Spain's first New World cities arose here. After 1534 its silver output was fabulous. Near by is the famous Real del Monte Silver Mine, found long ago by a muleteerwho became amillionaire and was made acount by the King of Spain (see text, page 255).
