Flames, starting outside a dump, spread over a third of the island behind winds of almost hurricane force. Some residents fled the island by boat. The fashionable resort town of Bar Harbor faces a series of islands: Bar Island (left) and the four Porcupines. A breakwater extending shoreward from Bald Porcupine (right) protects the harbor.
