A family in southern Serbia rolls past a sign urging, "Srećan put!---Have a nice trip!" It could be a farewell wish for their Zastava car. Production ended last fall when Italian carmaker Fiat bought the plant---a step widely seen as a reward from the European Union after Serbia elected a pro-Western government. As the fac- tory is retooled, Serbia's people swing between bitterness over recent hardships and hope for a better future in a nation peacefully integrated into Europe.
