Sparkling air, water, and autumn hues greet the author and his party in the trackless, unpeopled Noatak wilderness. Along the river's upper reaches, they camp on springy tundra (above). Downstream they feasted on char and salmon standardfare for area grizzlies. In summer, blueberries are plentiful (right). Nearing the end of the 350-mile trip, the author braves a snowy September (left).
