Is this another species doomed to disappear? POISED ON A LAVA BED, a Galapagos land iguana can serve as a table for a tick-eating finch-or as a meal for cats and dogs gone wild. A century ago the giant, cactus eating lizards swarmed across much of the Galapagos Islands' harsh terrain. Today they survive only as isolated populations-victims of rapacious introduced life. Assisted by a National Geographic Society grant, German born zoologist Dr. Dagmar I. Werner has accepted the chal lenge of studying the life habits of these endangered reptiles. Camping for weeks at a time on the wild, uninhabited island of Fernandina, Dr. Werner now carries her study to the rim of a still-fuming volcano. Contribute to the success of such timely research.
