Sowing seeds of peace, Tom Hargrove (below) returns to Vietnam's Mekong River Delta. When he served as a U. S. military adviser in 1969, Hargrove brought "miracle rice" to local farmers and thus was spared by the Viet Cong. Now he brings a new variety developed by the Interna tional Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. It was bred from a disease-resistant land race abandoned by Vietnamese farmers for the strains Hargrove and others introduced in the 1960s. Today half of Vietnam's fields, like this seedling bed (above), are planted in improved varieties.
