Kowloon was leased. The remaining parts of Kow loon, the harbor, and Hong Kong Island were ceded to Great Britain. Most Hong Kong Chinese I know would greet the figure of $11,500 per capita income with open mouthed awe. It is inflated by individuals who have millions of dollars in income. I think a median income of $4,000 to $5,000 might be closer. One hopes the new owners will be sensitive to the needs of these fine, hardworking people. ROBERT FOY Kirkland, Washington Middle East Map I am a U. S. Marine currently [February] stationed near the front lines in Operation Desert Storm. My squadron mates and I especially enjoyed the Mid dle East map, which we used as a training aid. SGT. JOSEPH UNWIN FPOSan Francisco, California The hostilities were only five days old when your map arrived. It recalls the early days of World War II when we had a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC map of the Asian-Pacific area, one of the best available at the time. KENNETH RIVOIRE Pawling,New York About 200 miles north of Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, you show the old Arab seaport of Yanbu al Bahr, but not the modern town of Yanbu as Sinaiyah, six miles to the southeast. Extending 15 miles along the Red Sea coastline, its oil refineries, petro chemical complexes, industrial plants, and a stra tegic port facility support a residential community of 25,000. It is here that the terminals of the crude oil and gas pipelines are located, rather than within the Yanbu al Bahr area, as shown. ADAM S. BERESTYNSKI Laguna Beach, California It is evident that the population figures you quoted for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the other Gulf States were furnished by the governments con cerned. Be aware that those figures include an often substantial foreign work force.
