That's because Anne Louise Jones knows that getting parents involved isthe surest way to help children improve their math skills. That's why she encourages the parents of her math students at Philippi Elementary School in Philippi, West Virginia to sit in on classes or become classroom volunteers. And why she started a series of nighttime "Parent Involvement in Math" classes to help parents learn to help their children. Since Mrs. Jones began this program in 1987, those students whose parents have participated have shown remarkable improvement in their math scores, with some students improving up to 55 per centile points. The program has been so successful it has spread to every elemen tary and middle school in the county. "Through the parent classes, parents become acquainted with the skills that their children need to learn, and how they can help at home'' says Anne Louise. "But parents take home more than skills; they take home a winning attitude about school and learning:' We at State Farm think Anne Louise has awinning attitude, too. That's why we're proud to honor her with our Good Neighbor Award, and to contribute $5,000 to Philippi Elementary School in her name. Anne Louise Jones.
