Author Bryson says that "thinking of tomorrow is an alien concept in Spain." Young Spanish scien tists and researchers have never been so convinced of that till now, when the government has sacri ficed science to save money. Does anyone know how much the Olympic Games, Expo '92, and cul tural events in Madrid will cost Spain's develop ment? I am sure that the world now understands why Spain is (and will be) a country of bullfighters, nazarenos, and nationalists and not one of scien tists and investigators. JER6NIMO J. G6MEZ Madrid,Spain The influence of the thousand years of Jewish par ticipation in Spain was omitted. The Jews contrib uted greatly to the economy, arts, philosophy, and sciences of that country until their expulsion in 1492 by Ferdinand and Isabella. ELAINE L. PRAG Chicago, Illinois The delicate issue of Basque terrorism is treated with the opinions of a journalist from a newspaper that supports the terrorists and a politician who claims the Basque country is a police state. Spain is a democracy. Even the politician Josu Cerrato can speak freely, and human rights are respected. The problems of the Basque region are very complex; car bombs, assassinations, and terror will not solve them. More than 80 percent of the voters in recent elections in the region voted for political parties that oppose terrorism. FERNANDO DONATE KansasCity, Missouri In the March 15 elections to the Catalan Parlia ment, 55 percent of the people who voted cast their ballots for Catalan parties and made an openly sep aratist party the third largest in Catalonia. The day may not be far away when Catalonia regains its independence in the newly shaped Europe. MARSAL GAVALDA Barcelona, Spain The major party in Catalonia remains staunchly opposed to separatism. Lion Survey I was most interested to read your story on the Ngorongoro Crater lions and the problem of in breeding. For some years now scientists have been distributing animal sperm to many countries using cold storage or animal hosts. Could this method of breeding be applied to the Ngorongoro lions? There are many lions in captivity that could be used as donors to encourage healthy propagation of the gene pool in a controlled environment such as that the crater offers.
