Elder statesman of the groves, 77-year old Hartley Bowmar carries a sack of oranges to a collec tion bin in Orland, at the northern edge of California's citrus-growing belt. Bowmar and his fel low pickers earn the minimum wage, with bonuses for high pro duction and, he says, "freefruit and lots of exercise." Bowmar plans to keep work ing, zipping between Sacramento Valley groves on his motor cycle, "as long as I can still scurry up the ladder." He adds: "I never get tired of the smell of oranges.
