ERIC HINER my hand and shoulder. I was lucky,yes, but this defensive animal, I realized later, was not trying to eat me; it was in fact driving me away, quite possi bly seeing me as a potential predator. Since then I have learned defensive behavior myself. When photographing in Bikini, I sometimes donned a stainless steel mesh suit and slipped into a plastic "shark scooter" (above). The eerie thing is that I didn't know that a gray reef shark had sneaked up below me until I saw this picture.
