Solid, stolid, and adored, Asanowaka lumbers past admirers in Niigata. In counter point to their slightly built fellow countrymen, rikishi are fat, but-with their intense exertions-not necessarily unhealthy, and to many Japanese women they are most definitely not unattractive. At retirement, usually around age 30, some open their own training stables. Others slim down and embark on second careers.
