An icy trap almost ended Messner's solo push soon after a 5 a.m. startfrom High Base Camp, when a snowbridge leadingto the NorthCol (above) collapsed,dropping him into a crevasse. A tiny ledge stopped his fall; painstakingly, Messner kicked NENA HOLGUIN(ABOVE) steps out of the abyss. As deadly as cre vasses, exhaustion soon became the over riding challenge of a two-and-a -half-day ascent that required two bivouacs (be low).
