They both placed their faith in The Hartford Side by side in the home office of The Hartford Insurance Group are two historically significant documents. One of them is the Hartford fire insurance policy on the home of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. Dated February 8, 1861, it was written for Mr. Lincoln by James L. Hill, Hartford Agent, just a few weeks before Lincoln's first inauguration. The document beside it is Robert E. Lee's signed application for a Hartford policy on his famous "Arlington" mansion just across the Potomac from Washington. Dated October 17, 1859, it was prepared by Hartford Agent Andrew Jamieson. The protection offered by The Hartford in 1961 differs greatly, of course, from the basic fire insurance of the 1860's. The protection now available has broadened to include virtually every type of coverage for home, car, life, business, and family security. But the character of The Hartford and its Agents which inspired the confidence of Lincoln and Lee 100 years THE HARTFORD ago remains the same today.
