KODACHROMESC NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Wild-flower hunters find blooms on the rim of Tuckerman Ravine. Blanketed by snow until summer, flowers on the head wall of this glacial cirque abbreviate their blossoming time. Springtime violets often pop out with fall's goldenrod. Large-flowered trillium (Trillium grandi florum) glows starlike in moist woodlands. Pale laurel (Kalmia polifolia)nods delicate blossoms in a trailside meadow (lower left). Diapensia (Diapensia lapponica) clings bravely to a rocky bed above timber line. 230
