Twin drills bite iron ore at Kiruna RELENTLESSLY, the machine moves along a mine passage, boring hole after hole for the blast ers. Kiruna, a settlement far north of the Arctic Circle, annually pro duces some 13 million tons of high grade ore. Cleft and scarred with old open pit mining, Luossavaara Mountain yields ore that contains up to 68 per cent iron. Today miners work under ground.
