Historic Halifax: EXPLORER CHAMPLAIN, in his logbook, made note of this landlocked, ice-free inlet three and a half centuries ago. Micmac Indians called it Chebucto, chief of havens. Edward Cornwallis founded the first per manent settlement in 1749. Today Nova Scotia's capital is a bustling city of 92,000. Large enough to accommodate the bulk of the U. S. and British Navies, the harbor welcomes more than 3,000 ships a year. It was a major British base during the Ameri can Revolution and the War of 1812. Con Victor's reward: C. W.
