Boom! Goes the Starting Gun; under Taut Canvas Racers Hit the Line at Annisquam A brisk wind, dead astern and filling mainsails and spinnakers, speeds these Inter national 210-class sloops on their way around a triangular course in the Squam Day regatta on Ipswich Bay. The annual event draws scores of small craft from yacht clubs along the North Shore of Massachusetts. At right, vacationers bask in the sun at the base of Edgartown Light, on Martha's Vineyard Island. Across the channel lies Chappa quiddick Island, sandy barrier between Edgartown and the open Atlantic. © National Geographic Society 161 Kotlachlromes by Rolert F. Sisson
