Quickening, it drops 225 feet to Montreal in a series of boiling rapids spread over 120 miles. Deep-sea ships steam a dredged channel between Montreal and Quebec City. Oceanward then, the river widens until, 100 miles broad, it resembles an inland sea. Tidewater reaches Trois Rivieres, more than 900 miles inland; salt water comes almost to Quebec.
