Herald Tribune Lady Leathernecks Return to Duty; Their Motto: "Free a Man to Fight" Bound for Camp Lejeune, this platoon of women Marine reserves marches down a New York street. Called up with them were 1,000 officers and enlisted men of the First Infantry Battalion. In World War II, 18,000 women Marines, performing a variety of home-front jobs, released men enough to form a new division (page 668).
