4 Claws Ready, a Hermit Crab Guards Its Borrowed House of Shell Always a squatter, the hermit seeks an empty spiral shell and coils its soft abdomen down into the whorl. When the crab outgrows one house, it hunts a larger one. This underwater shot shows the boxerlike defen sive pose, with claws ready for action. + Spiny Lobster, with Eyes on Stalks, Peers in Several Directions at Once An eye-level close-up shows the "horns" above the stalked eyes. These presumably serve as beetle-brow protectors of the remarkable sight organs. Flesh of the spiny lobster, or sea crayfish, like that of the northern lobster, is prized as a delicacy.
