735 This Mass of Junk Was the $100,000,000 Tirpitz, Pride of Hitler's Battle Fleet Lurking in Norwegian waters, the 45,000-ton ship tied up the British Home Fleet for three years. In November, 1944, English bombers dipped into a fjord near Troms¢ and sank her (page 740). Tirpitz has given up tons of steel. Her guns, removed and greased, lie on the fjord's bottom awaiting possible use. Hundreds of electric motors have come out of the holds undamaged. One salvaged diesel generates power for the village of Honningsvag.
