15 Kodachrome by National Geographic Photographer Willard R. Culver "Solace Yourselves with the Good of These Delectable Mountains": Pilgrim's Progress Titanic earth forces some 60 million years ago thrust up a block 7,000 feet. Stream and glacier, rain and .frost sculptured this high ground until mountain forms emerged. Blunted at first, the peaks grew sharp as they wore down to their hard pre-Cambrian cores. Grand Teton, the highest, stands now at 13,766 feet above sea level.
