() National Geographic Society 756 Memorial Fresco at Nettuno Tells the Story of the Sicily-Italy Campaigns The Allies invaded Sicily on July 10, 1943. Notwithstanding storm at sea, the daring assaults succeeded, thanks to the seamanship of the United States and British navies. Captured Italian generals called the attack a complete surprise. Within 39 days no enemy force remained on the island. In early September the Allies began landings on the mainland of Italy. New Jersey artist Carlo Ciampaglia's painting illustrates both operations.
