619 . .. the Great Antarctic Explorer Who Made a Heroic Crossing of This Rugged Island Unable to sail around South Georgia, Shackleton and his companions crossed mountains and glaciers to a whaling station near Grytviken, and then organized rescue parties that finally saved every member of the original expedition. In 1922 Shackleton returned to Grytviken for another antarctic trip. He died here, and shipmates raised the simple cross to their leader. Britannia lies amid icebergs just calved from a glacier.
