0' POTATOES AND BABIES-IRELAND'S HAPPY HERITAGE Almost every farm grows the tubers which are the country's staple crop. In 1846 and 1847 the potato blightcaused one ofthe greatest calamities ever to overwhelm a nation. Over 21,000 persons starved to death when the principal source of food was destroyed. Now farmers spray their plants toprevent blight.
