Banana plantations surround the villages, peopled mostly by Fulahs (Plates II, VI, VII). Large herds of cattle and sheep are raised. Once big game was abundant, but today lions are found only in the extreme northern part. Leopards, hyenas, and wild cats are more common. Among the birds, egrets, marabous, pelicans, touracos, and parrots are numerous.
