Why so capable a fighterdisappeared from theearth remains amystery. Many skeletons have been found buried beneath large deposits of volcanic ash, suggesting that some, at least, were victims ofviolent eruptions. Their record hasbeen preserved in the Badlands of South Dakota, where numerous fossils have been excavated.
