Lalks Monuments of Ancient Maya Civilization Still Stand at Copin Elaborately carved stelae and imposing temples have enabled archeologists to reconstruct much of the story of an Indian empire that flourished in Honduras some 1,000 years ago. Scientists of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, in cooperation with the Honduran Government, are restoring the monuments and deciphering their dates. Ruins of a city that once stood in this Copan region cover an area of about 15 square miles.
