Only afew craft can be kept on the deck when planes are taking off or landing. Representative Carl Vinson, Chairman of the House Naval Affairs Committee, introduced a bill on June 3, 1942, providing for some 30 big, new carriers with their accompanying cruisers and destroyers. These areinaddition tothe11carriers now nearly completed or building. Many merchant ships, too, are being converted for launching and carrying airplanes, but the exact number isacarefully guarded secret.
