Vital link with the important island, PUERTO RICO S... thousands of travelers, millions of dollars worth of cargo-move to and from Puerto Rico in peacetime years-in AGWI SHIPS The fame of Puerto Rico as a tropical play ground for northern holiday-makers has spread far and wide, but hardly less known perhaps is this beautiful isle's great commercial im portance. In normal times before the war our trade with Puerto Rico reached $187,000,000 a year! An abundance of sugar, tobacco, fruit, rum and hand embroidered work was shipped north, while steamers from the States brought down manufactured goods, as well as the refrigerated and processed foods so necessary to the island's economy. Today the cargo and passenger steamers which served Puerto Rico are away on war duty. But when peace dawns, the great steamship organ izations, developed through many years of shipping to "the islands", will be ready. Their modern docks, warehouses, and shore personnel -experienced in the intricatehandlingof Puerto Rican trade-will swing into service again! Forover 50 years the PORTO RICO LINE has been a vital link with the important island of Puerto Rico, and the nearby Dominican Re public. There'll be a chorus of friendly "Viva Vapores"! when these familiar, ships steam back into the harbors of San Juan and Trujillo City, to take up their normal cargo and pas senger service between the islands and our own Atlanticports.
