In the Smoke of a Sweet Grass Fire, the Nude Body of a Captive Girl Is Bathed beforeShe IsSacrificed tothe Morning Star Human sacrifice among North American Indians was rare. This rite, believed to make the earth fertile, waspracticed bythe Skidi-Pawnees. Itisreminiscent of sacrifices held long ago in the valley of Mexico. The girl was tied to a scaffold and shot through the heart withan arrow. At such aceremony 125years ago, a young Pawnee warrior dashed to the scaffold, rescued the victim just as she was about to be slain, and carried her away onhis horse. Soimpressed were the elders of the tribe with his heroic action that the Skidi-Pawnees eventually abandoned the barbarous custom.
