Here on the field of Waterloo, nine miles south of Brussels, Napoleon was defeated by the Duke of Wellington'sallied army in1815. The mound, 133feethigh, was raised over the spot where the Prince of Orange was wounded. On top stands the Belgian Lion, cast from themetal ofcaptured French cannon. Belgians and Netherlanders fought together at Waterloo and for 15 years thereafter -tried to live together as a nation.
