00 Arnold Arboretum, E.H.Wilson Thatched Houses of Japanese Nestle on the Slopes of Port Lloyd, Where Savory's ColonistsFirst Settled inthe Bonins in1830 Taken on the Arnold Arboretum Expedition to the Bonins in 1917, this photograph is one of the few in existence showing Chichi Jima, orPeel Island. Here landed Nathaniel Savory, a resourceful New Englander, with a small group of Europeans and Hawaiians to colonize the uninhabited islands. Commodore Perry onhis historic trip to Japan in 1853 stopped at Port Lloyd. Seeing its strategic value, he bought water-front property (page390). Later the Japanese annexed the Bonins and swallowed the little colony of English-speaking islanders. Bombing and shelling by United States carrier task forceshave destroyed many houses and fortifications of this town, which the Japanese call Omura (pages 387, 404, 405). The main town lies beyond the hill.
