Staff Photographer Maynard Owen Williams At Evening the Mystery of Stonehenge Fires the Imagination. Was It a Temple to the Sun, Monument tothe Dead, or Calendar? Astronomers contend it announced the seasons by measuring the sunrise angle; they trace its erection to 1700 B.C. Its name derives from the Saxon Stanhengist (hanging stones). Fallen, some of these have been re-erected. Lintels and columns were chiseled to dovetail. TheState owns the stones; the National Trust owns the "Skyline," as this part of Salisbury Plain is known (page 422).
