Through Desolate and Forbidding Sand-hill Country Small Fires Guide the Natives The expedition traveled many hundreds of miles across this terrain, the string of twelve camels skirting the edge of one of thesand ridges tofind asuitable place to pass. Spinifex (Triodia sp.) covers much of the surface. The smaller trees are mulga (Acacia aneura), and the larger, desert beefwood, or"she-oak" (Casuarina sp.). Two of the smoke signals lit by the camel man to enable him to hold to a straight line can be seen here. The distant oneisalmost burnt out(page 95).
