Luftwaffe fighters were based on Dimne during the war. The town (background) is divided into two parts-the Oberland, atop the cliffs, and the Unter land, along the narrow shore on the east side of the island. The British, in demolishing Helgoland's fortifications, planned tosuspend operations during spring and autumn bird migrations.
