Army Air forces At the Instant Totality Ends, the "Diamond Ring" Effect Appears It is the brilliant spot of light on the upper left rim of the moon's black disk, produced by sunlight shining between mountains on the moon. This phenomenon is seen just at the beginning and end of totality.
