MellonFoundation) In marine art, no American excelled Homer, creator of a stirring series of deep-sea classics. The beauty and fury of water fascinated him. From English shipwrecks to Caribbean derelicts, he depicted the perils of sailing folk. Maine's rugged coast he sketched from the shelter of a small portable studio. "Breezing Up," originally entitled "A Fair Wind," was painted in Gloucester in 1873-76.
