U.S.Navy, Official Waves Break High on Navy Oiler Tallulaah as She Pumps Fuel to CarrierEssex and aDestroyer inthe Open Pacific This method of refueling enabled Navy vessels to stay at sea for months at a time without returning to base, vastly extending their range ofoperations. The Essex, partly visible at left, is receiving fuel oil and gasoline through two hoses looped between her and the Tallulaah. Thedestroyer ispreparing totake fuel from theother side. Fuel can be transferred even in a full gale. A million gallons of oil may be delivered in five or six hours whilethe ships steam about 100feetapart.
