A MASK OF WOOD COVERED WITH HAMMERED SHEET COPPER It has taken the combined efforts of the Sultan and the French Admin istrator to keep the few remaining native smiths of Cameroun at work in Foumban. There are few minerals in the Cameroun, but bulk copper and bronze were formerly imported from other tribes, and worked at Foumban. The mask is about 150 years old. A TROUBADOUR OF FOUMBAN To European ears all elaborate African music, especially that of stringed instruments, is displeasing. The quieter, more personal, songs and their accompaniment have, however, haunting and charming melodies. Itisa curious fact that whites find italmost impossible torecall ortorepeat even the simplest African musical refrains.
