Itwas completed in1584 and hasbeen one of the principal residences of Spanish royalty ever since. The structure is in the form of a vast rectangle,with achurch rising from thecenter. More than 2,500 windows and close to a hundred miles of corridors vie with gorgeous tapestries and greatpaintings tolend itdistinction. Here Philip died and was buried (see, also, text, page 254).
