Photograph by Capt. Albert W. Stevens IN THE BUREAU OF STANDARDS, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROMOTES THENATION'S WELFARE Here more than 500 scientists and technicians not only seek to establish and maintain standards for measuring length, mass, capacity, time, electricity, optics, heat, and other things in physics and chemistry, but they also study melting points, densities, wave-lengths, etc., and problems inatomic physics, X-rays, radioactivity, and aerodynamics. They test scientific instruments and devise new ones. Here is, inbrief, theconsulting, research, and testing lab oratory in physics, chemistry, technology, and many branches of engineering, for the Government (see, also, text, pages 569and 577).
