They made small objection tohispresence ontheir breeding ground, and when he kept perfectly still paid little attention to him. One day, however, a penguin waddled upand with afriendly "quaark" placed a pebble at his feet. This performance the bird repeated several times, until Mr. Ponting, thinkingtoencourage it,replied with a"quaark" of his own. Whereupon the startled creature fled as fast as feet and flippers could speed it.
