THE TRAVELS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON Photograph by Ewing Galloway ON THIS SITE GEORGE WASHINGTON TOOK HIS OATH OF OFFICE AS FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES The Subtreasury of the United States stands on historic ground. New York's whipping post, pillory, and debtor's prison once stood here. Washington was inaugurated on this spot, and the stone on which he stood has been marked and placed in the walls of the building. At the end of the street rises Trinity Church. The statue of Washington is the work of the sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward.
