©Jim Thompson SUNRISE AND MISTS SOFTEN THE RUGGEDNESS OF THE MOUNTAINS From the "Grandstand of the Smokies," atop Mount Le Conte (see text, page 673), the morning view of the Tennessee portion ofthe park transports the beholder to fairyland. There are at least 20 forested peaks 5,000 feet or more in altitude in this region. The mystery of a blue haze constantly veils the more distant heights; hence the name Great Smokies. The far-distant ridge is in North Carolina.
