Photograph by Edwin L.Wisherd TWENTY-FIVE MORE PIECES THIS SIZE MAKE THE GIANT GAS BAG This section, shaped like a piece of pie, is 42 feet across in the foreground and tapers to a point 141 feet away from the camera. More than 213 acres oflong-fiber cotton cloth-nearly enough to make an awning that would shelter the playing field in Yankee Stadium-was used to make the balloon skin. This cloth was impregnated with 30 applications of rubber. Because tiny particles of dust or grit might damage the fabric, the workroom is sealed, theair conditioned, and workers must wear soft moccasins.
